About Them (text derived straight from website)

Deaf Child Worldwide is the international development team at the National Deaf Children’s Society. They are dedicated to enabling deaf children and young people to overcome poverty, inequality and isolation. To achieve this, they support a diverse range of local partner organisations and community groups around the world who share our vision, mission and values.

The World Heath Organisation's latest estimate is that there are 32 million deaf children in the world. The majority of them (around 80%) live in developing countries.  Countless millions more deaf children are excluded from official statistics.

There is a clear link between poverty and deafness. They work with some of the poorest communities in the world, where the need is greatest, in South Asia, East Africa and Latin America.

Their vision is a world without barriers for every deaf child.

Their mission is to remove the barriers to the achievement of deaf children throughout the world.

They believe that...

  • Deaf children can do anything other children can do, given early diagnosis and the right support from the start.

  • Deaf children should be involved in decisions which affect them at as early an age as possible.

  • Families are the most important influence on deaf children and young people and need clear, balanced information to make informed choices.

  • Effective language and communication skills lie at the heart of deaf children's and young people's social, emotional and intellectual development.

  • Deaf children should be valued by society and have the same opportunities as any other child.

What They Do

(Text derived from original website)

Their mission is to remove the barriers to the achievement of deaf children throughout the world.

They will achieve this by:

  • Empowering deaf children, young people and their families to determine what happens in their lives and shape the services they receive.

  • Increasing awareness of the support deaf children and young people need to achieve and challenging social attitudes which prevent them from achieving.

  • Influencing and challenging key decision makers to make deaf children and young people a political priority.

They support a diverse range of local organisations and community groups working with deaf children, young people and their families. They support our local partner organisations with technical advice on deafness, professional guidance, publications, training materials and resources, and funding for projects that enable deaf children to overcome poverty, inequality and isolation.
